Solar Eclipse Information

eclipse
On August 21, 2017, for the first time since 1918, a solar eclipse will be visible on a path across the United States. DCCS will be in the path of totality for the solar eclipse. DCCS has been busy planning to make this once in a lifetime event a unique learning experience for our students.

All DCCS students (with their signed permission slip) will be allowed to go outside and participate in activities and view the period of totality (“Solar Eclipse Viewing”). Classroom teachers will be providing additional details regarding viewing location for their particular class as the event approaches.

For more information and the permission slip, please click here.

Welcome to South Decatur Elementary!

2017/2018 School Year Registration

This year Decatur County Community Schools will be offering students and parents the opportunity to do the majority of school paperwork and fees online through parent Harmony 3 accounts. Returning students will be able to begin this process online on July 10. Parents must have a Harmony account already set up, student Harmony accounts cannot be used for registration. See information below about setting up your Harmony 3 account. You will need a Harmony registration code to set up an account, the schools may not be able to get this to you until the end of July (see instructions below for more info). If you try to register at home before July 26th and have difficulties, we recommend going to the school during the registration hours listed to get assistance. Click here for instructions document on setting up a new parent Harmony 3 account.

If you do not have home internet, a device, or still need to set up your parent Harmony 3 account DCCS is offering time at each school to register on-site. Parents will still be registering their student(s) online but may use computers at each school to complete their yearly paperwork. There will be people available on-site to help parents and students register. You will also be able to pay your school fees online or by cash/check at the school. If you do not have a parent Harmony 3 account you will be able to set one up one site with assistance (you will need an email address).

**New students must register on-site.

Dear Parents,

On Monday, August 21, 2017 all of North America will experience an eclipse of the sun.  A solar eclipse occurs when the moon blocks any part of the sun.  This is the first time since 1918 that a solar eclipse will be visible on a path across the United States, and provides an amazing learning opportunity for students to see our solar system in action!

The eclipse will occur in our area beginning at 12:57 p.m. and ending at 3:58 p.m.  The peak time to experience the solar eclipse falls at the beginning of our regularly scheduled elementary school dismissal time. Student safety during the eclipse is our top priority.
On Monday, August 21, Decatur County Community Schools will operate on a one-hour delay.  All activities, including bus pick-up times, will take place one hour later than typically scheduled.  Breakfast and lunch will still be served to students, but will also take place one hour later than normally scheduled.  This will allow our students the opportunity to engage in eclipse viewing activities whether outdoors using protective eclipse glasses, or indoors on the live NASA feed.  This will also allow us to avoid bus-loading and student travel during the peak time for this event.  Students at both high schools will not travel to C-4 during the day on Monday, and they will have alternative activities on Monday.  Any change in the after school athletic schedule will be communicated to the appropriate parents by their child’s high school.

The schedule for school start and dismissal time is as follows:

  • North Decatur Elementary :  9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • North Decatur Jr/Sr High School:  9:10 a.m. – 4:20 p.m.
  • South Decatur Elementary:   9:25 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.
  • South Decatur Jr/Sr High School:  9:15 a.m. – 4:25 p.m.
These precautionary measures will also be in place on Monday:
  • There will be no outdoor recess after  11:50 a.m.
  • There will be no outdoor Physical Education (Gym) after  11:50 a.m.
  • Any student participating in the outdoor eclipse viewing is required to have a completed permission slip (see enclosed form).
More information about “The Great American Solar Eclipse” can be found on NASA’s website

https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/.  A solar eclipse is an outstanding learning opportunity for our students.  Thank you for your assistance while we take these precautions to ensure an exciting day while keeping our students safe.

Sincerely,
Dr. Jarrod Burns
Superintendent
